Al Kahil pink lagoon (Khawr Ghawi)

Located at the center of Al Wusta coast, the pink lagoons of Al Kahil and Al Jazir get their name out of the color the lagoon takes on when green algae transform the character of the water and make the encompassing sand into astonishing light pink in color. It is a mesmerizing seen at once, but is not an optical illusion or illumination, but real. The intensity of the shade could differ consistently, the water just before the ocean has a clear, legitimate pink shade.

 

 

Damaniyat island

The Ad Dimaniyat Islands is a protected area in Oman. The Nature Reserve is located in Wilayat Al Seeb in the Muscat Governorate and lies about 18 km off the coast of Barka (70 km west of Muscat, the capital). It is composed of nine islands with a total area of 100 hectares. The reserve has a rich natural heritage and is replete with several kinds of coral reefs, including some examples that are quite rare. The island is home to a large number of sea turtles that lay their eggs and nest there, as well as a magnet for migratory and indigenous birds.

Fins white beach

Fins white beach is located in Sharqiyah region overlooking the Hajar Mountains on the coastal road from Muscat towards Sur. The white sand of the beach is formed from ancient coral reef, lapped by the clear turquoise water of the Sea of Oman. This creates one of the area’s most relaxing locations. These sub-tropical waters allow comfortable swimming for much of the year. Fins white beach is a very popular camping place among the tourists due to its scenic location.  

Fizayah beach

Fizayah beach is located on the western side of Dhofar, around 50 km from Salalah. After passing the famous Mughsail beach and the hairpin bend road, an off road track winds its way down the very steep slope to the coast and offers great views. Interesting are the different vegetation levels and the numerous caves and rock formations along the way. After 6 km drive the blue-green ocean and a spectacular beach with numerous sandy bays covered by rocks can be seen. This place is extremely popular for wild camping. A small fish port attracts seagulls and other seabirds.

Khaluf beach

The white sand dunes of Al Khaluf, also called Ras Bin Tawt or, more aptly, the Sugar Dunes, is a beach, located near fishing village of Al Khaluf, 400km south of Muscat. Khaluf is a beautiful remote area, close to the ocean, with the white dunes offset by dark rocks and hills, creating an exceptional landscape. The area has a special atmosphere and is a favorite spot for visitors who often come here for weekend trips and picnics. Wild camping at the beach gives one a magical experience with breathtaking sunset, thousands of stars, silence and the white desert all around.

Khor Dahariz

Khor Al Dahariz is located at the eastern entrance of Salalah in Dhofar region. Its waters mingle with the basin waters of Salalah, especially with the wells located on the shoreline. The lagoon has a high and special biodiversity. It is home to many migratory birds. One of the hotspots in Oman for bird watching.

Masirah Island

Masirah Island is an island off the east coast of mainland Oman in the Arabian Sea, and the largest island of the country with an area of about 649 km². Most of the island’s interior is deserted, but its beaches and stunning landscapes attract tourists constantly from the mainland. Masirah Island has just opened for tourism. One can still only get to the island by ferry, managed by the National Ferry Company operating between Shannah and Masirah. For kite surfers, Masirah is an attractive spot in summer because of the monsoon winds. The island is an important hatching ground for loggerhead sea turtles.

Mughsail beach

Mughsail Beach is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in Dhofar. Located around 40 km west of Salalah, the almost 6 km long white sandy beach with palm trees and countless sea birds offers a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean. In the background, the mighty dark cliffs of the western Dhofar mountains frame the view in a picturesque way. Shortly after the beach, a footpath leads to Al Marneef Cave (also AI Marnif), a mighty overhanging rock that forms a cave-like entrance to the famous “blowholes” on the flat rocky coast. These blowholes are a special spectacle because from time to time they emit hissing and gurgling fountains, especially during the monsoon season.

Ras Madraka

Ras Madraka, located near Duqm, offers both sunshine and mild weather. Its location on the coast means there is always a cool breeze, accompanied by the refreshing spray of the Arabian Sea, and Madraka’s climate remains largely pleasant from September to March. It is becoming a favorite camping spot to experience a night out with nature. The scenery here is aesthetically alluring and it has also developed a reputation as a good fishing spot. The contrast between white, soft sand and black volcanic rock formations make Ras Madrakah a favorite for those camping and fishing close to the shore.

Shanna salt plains

After passing the desert area of Wahiba, you will encounter the pinkish white salt flats of Shanna along the drive towards the Shannah ferry port. The area is located around 400km from Muscat. The definition of a “salt flat” is “a flat expanse of salt left by the total evaporation of a body of water“.  It almost looks like snow as you drive along.
