Deserts & Dunes

Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter)

Location: 18.461163, 53.496478

Rub Al Khali (The empty quarter) desert is the largest sandy desert in the world, encompassing most of the southern Arabian peninsula including Oman. The desert covers some 650,000 km2 (250,000 sq mi) including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The desert is accessible from Salalah and it is around 190km north of the city. The terrain is covered with sand dunes with heights up to 250 m (820 ft). The region is classified as “hyper-arid”, yet the desert has its own biodiversity including flora and fauna, well adapted to survive in such inhospitable conditions. The desert is mostly untouched and pristine. There is a Bedouin style camp at the edge of the vast desert, where you should stay overnight to experience the beauty and tranquility of Arabian Desert.

Sharqiya sands

Location: 22.472590, 58.744527

The Sharqiya Sands, formerly known as “Wahiba Sands” is a region of desert in North Oman. The region was named for the Bani Wahiba tribe. It is relatively a small desert, compared to the Rub Al Khali desert defined by a boundary of 180 kilometers (110 mi) north to south and 80 kilometers (50 mi) east to west. Due to the proximity to the capital city of Muscat, the desert has become a very popular destination for tourists. Many camps varying from basic to luxury provide accommodation for overnight camping experiences.
